Bite Balancing (Equillibration)

Bite balancing, or Occlusal Equllibration, is a process performed by Dr. Crete here in our office.  Molds are taken of your teeth and measurements are made of your jaw and bite.  This information is then programmed into a bite simulator and analyzed by Dr. Crete to determine what steps to take to equal out (equilibrate) and balance the teeth, jaw joint and muscles.

The actual equillibration is a process in which we adjust your bite by reshaping the biting surfaces of your teeth.   Dr. Crete uses a sophisticated  tooth marking technique to record the contact points on each tooth and then adjusts those contacts based on his previous analysis.  The goal is to obtain a bite that is balanced and stable.  This process is pain free and usually takes from 1 to 2 hours to complete.  In some cases,  follow up appointments are necessary to fine tune the adjustments.

Equillibration is a safe and effective procedure that pevents a chain reaction of problems in your mouth and will restore harmony and balance to your teeth and bite.

Why Have A Balanced Bite?

It is  important for the health of your mouth to have your teeth come together properly when you bite and chew.

Equillibration can prevent you from experiencing the following problems:

Loose teeth
Pain when chewing
A toothache
Jaw-joint pain
Headaches
Notches at the gum line Abfraction Lesions*

Note: An Abfraction Lesion is a notch in a tooth at the gum line where the enamel has broken off due to excessive and un-balanced bite forces.
