Improper Dental Hygiene
When your teeth are not cleaned properly by regular brushing and flossing, plaque accumulates and becomes minteralized by salivary calcium transforming plaque into calculus. Proper maintenance of the teeth above and below the gum line, done professionally by a dental hygienist or dentist, disrupts the developing plaque and calculus (tartar) and helps to remove the cause of gum disease. If plaque is not removed through regular professional dental cleanings and daily dental hygiene practices, bacteria may set in and cause gingivitis, which may eventually result in gum disease.
